Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about mountain biking in Georgia with ShredGeorgia. If your question isn’t answered here, feel free to contact us.
General Information
Is Georgia a safe destination for mountain biking?
Yes, Georgia is one of the safest and most hospitable countries in the world. However, the Caucasus mountains are wild and remote. This is why we recommend riding with professional local guides who understand the terrain, weather patterns, and local logistics.
What is the best time of year for an MTB tour?
The riding season typically runs from May to October. For high-altitude regions like Svaneti, Kazbegi, and Tusheti, the best window is July through September when the mountain passes are clear of snow.
Tours & Difficulty
How difficult are the trails?
Most of our tours are designed for intermediate to advanced riders. You should be comfortable with steep descents, loose rocks, and varied natural terrain. However, for custom tours, we can adapt the route to match your skill level.
What is included in a multi-day package?
Our 3 to 5-day tours usually include professional MTB guides, all internal transfers by 4×4 vehicles, accommodation in local guesthouses, and half-board (breakfast and dinner). We also provide daily route planning and technical support.
Can I book a custom tour?
Absolutely! We specialize in custom MTB adventures. We can adjust the itinerary daily based on your goals, energy levels, and even the weather to ensure you get the best riding experience possible. Check out how to Build Your Own Adventure.
Equipment & Gear
Should I bring my own bike or rent one?
You are welcome to bring your own bike, but we also offer high-quality full-suspension and hardtail rentals. For the rugged terrain of the Caucasus, we highly recommend a full-suspension enduro bike for maximum comfort and control.
What gear should I pack?
A sturdy helmet is mandatory. We also recommend a 15-20L hydration pack, multi-tool, spare tubes, waterproof layers (mountain weather changes fast), and thermal underwear for high-altitude nights.
Logistics & Safety
Do I need specialized insurance?
Yes. ShredGeorgia does not provide insurance, and we are not responsible for personal injuries. It is mandatory that all our clients have valid overseas sports insurance that covers mountain biking and high-altitude rescue.
What about the famous Georgian sheepdogs?
While riding through alpine pastures, you may encounter large livestock guardian dogs. Our guides are experts at handling these encounters safely. We often carry extra bread to distract them, but staying with your guide is the best way to avoid any issues.
